Wave of blasts rocks Manipur, 3 dead

Imphal (Sept 28): In one of the most audacious acts of violence in Manipur in recent times, suspected militants triggeredhttp://img.ymlp238.net/kxh8_12_2.jpgseven bombs — one after the other — which left two Assam Rifles jawans and a civilian dead on Friday near Kotha village, north of Moreh, along the Indo-Myanmar border.
Four other jawans and two civilians — both women — were also injured in the serial explosions which was targeted at security forces. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
Kotha , which almost straddles the Indo-Myanmar border, is the only village in the hills inhabited by plains-dwelling Meiteis.
The deceased Assam Rifles jawans have been identified as rifleman Jogendra Kaushik, hailing from Uttarakhand and Kewal Singh from Rajasthan. Both the deceased and the injured jawans belonged to the B Company of 24 Assam post located at Kotha village.
The deceased civilian has been identified as 55-year-old Ningthoujam Sangaijao of Kotha village. The two injured women, also hailing from the same village, are 40-year-old Angom Kaboklei and 30-year-old Angom Ritu Devi.
The seriously injured Angom Kaboklei have been referred to a hospital in Imphal while Ritu was discharged after treatment. The bodies of both the deceased jawans have been airlifted to Imphal.
According to the SDPO of Moreh, Balaram — who spoke to Seven Sisters Post from the spot — said that the first explosion occurred at a little over 1 pm of Friday and the other bombs went off one after the other. The bombs were laid about 20 to 25 feet apart along a village road between Kudengtabi and Kotha.
Quoting villagers he said that while four bombs went off in a series, the remaining three went off in another series after about five minutes. The bombs, he said, was planted on both sides of the village roads.
He said the attack took place when a foot patrolling team of the Assam Rifles was returning from the main Kudengthabi post with their rations.
The deceased civilian, a small-time bamboo-shoot seller, was resting with the two women at a spot when the bombs went off.
Following the explosions panic spread through Kotha village which has a historic significance for Manipur.
Additional troops of Assam Rifles and police rushed to the spot and conducted a brief search operation at a nearby New Kotha village from where police suspect the bombs were triggered.
Police said the attack was the handiwork of experts. "We have gathered splinters and some materials for sending to forensic laboratory to find out the nature of the explosives," said Balaram.
ABVP demands resignation of Forest Minister

GUWAHATI, Sept 28: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today decried that state of affairs in the Forest department and demanded the resignation of Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, for its failure to reign the poachers and unabated encroachment of forest lands in and around Kaziranga National Park.
This reaction came shortly after the killing of four rhinos in less that 48 hours, that triggered off huge protests and road blockades in the National Park and elsewhere in the State.
Meanwhile, ABVP general secretary Krishna Kanta Borah said, "The Tarun Gogoi led government has utterly failed to stop poaching activities in Kaziranga National Park. Our Forest Minister, Rockybul Hussain has proved his incompetency in dealing with poachers and the lack of sufficient manpower in the Kaziranga National Park."
He added, "Around 292 rhinos have been killed by poachers during the tenure of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. In the past 9 months, 14 rhinos have fallen victim to poachers. All this is happening freely, without any superior mechanism to stop the poachers."
He said that the government's excuse that floods have provided the poachers a free ground to carry out their activities, hold no water. Meanwhile, the body also alleged that illegal settlements in the National Park are breeding grounds of poachers, adding that huge areas of the National Park have been encroached by illegal Bangladeshi settlers.
In the present situation, around 4,85,674 hectares of forest lands along a stretch of  25,000 square kilometres have been encroached by illegal Bangladeshis. "Unless they are evicted, the problem of poaching cannot be solved," said a member.
The body further demanded creation of natural habitats for animals in places they migrate during floods, creation of highlands in the National Park, lifelong sentence to poachers, construction of a flyover near animal corridors, so that vehicles could pass through the National Highway in Kaziranga without disturbing wildlife and eviction of illegal settlers in the National Park.
On the other hands, State executive member of the ABVP, Simanta Das slammed the Prime Minister for failing to declare Assam floods as a national problem and creating a national task force to fight floods, despite assurances given during his 2004 aerial survey of flood affected region of Assam.
Rhino deaths: AASU raps government over contradictory figures

GUWAHATI, Sept 28: Coming down heavily on State Environment and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain for his failure to http://img.ymlp238.net/kxh8_rhino250.jpgprotect the rhinos in the State, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) said the Forest Minister has lost his right to hold his post.
In an interaction with the media here on Friday, AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and AASU president Shankar Prasad Rai said the figures revealed by an RTI report and the figures mentioned in the report submitted by State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain in the State Assembly this year on the number of rhinos killed in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) do not match. "The figures on the number of rhinos killed in Kaziranga given by the State Forest Minister in the Assembly and the figures shown in the RTI report are different. How is it possible as both are government figures?" Bhattacharya said.
It may be mentioned that the RTI was filed by a Jorhat-based journalist AK Borthakur.
"According to the figures given by the Forest Minister, 98 rhinos were killed by poachers in Kaziranga National Park from 2001 to 2009 but according to the RTI, 59 rhinos were killed by poachers in Kaziranga National Park in the same period. According to the Forest Minister, 672 rhinos met natural death in Kaziranga National Park from 2001 to 2009 but according to the RTI, 659 rhinos met natural death in Kaziranga National Park in the same period. Both are government figures. How can they be different? The government seems to be hiding something relating to rhino deaths in the State and the State Forest Minister should clear his stand in this regard," Rai said.
"The killings of rhinos in Kaziranga and other wildlife sanctuaries in the State have increased manifold during the Congress rule. The presence of illegal cross border nationals has also increased in the State's wildlife sanctuaries. These illegal nationals are involved in poaching of animals found in the State's wildlife sanctuaries," Bhattacharya said.
The AASU has also demanded deployment of Army and paramilitary forces in the KNP for saving the wild animals from poachers. "The government should issue shoot-at-sight order in Kaziranga and find out the illegal Bangladeshi nationals settled near Kaziranga," Rai added.

Bhashya of M G Vaidya : sudarshnaji

Guwahati, Tuesday, September 25, 2012

'No rehabilitation without proper land documents'

KOKRAJHAR, Sept 24: The rehabilitation of the displaced people staying in various relief camps in BTC http://img.ymlp209.net/kxh8_khampaborgayari.jpgregion is being made only after proper scrutiny of land and other related documents. Talking to reporters, BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary said that no one would be allowed to resettle if they failed to produce land pattas and other documents verifying them as Indian citizens.

Borgoyary said, the BTC administration was gearing up for proper scrutiny of displaced people in the recent violence, for resettling them to their respective villages. He said the scrutiny was just completed in the Chirang district, where people were forced to produce land pattas.

Borgoyary said, of 25,000 families affected in the recent conflicts, 18,000 families had filled up the formats of the rehabilitation forms as per the Government norms in Kokrajhar district. He said, nearly 8,000 families were reported to have no land patta while another 8,000 families were recorded as doubtful citizens. On the other hand, 1,077 families have no lands in the region, he said, adding that the BTC administration, in association with concerned department of the State Government has been carrying out the process of resettlement in the region, so that only the genuinely affected people were rehabilitated at the earliest.

Borgoyary said, the displaced people would be rehabilitated after the proper scrutiny of the land documents as per the agreement with the group of ministers of Assam Government and BTC administration in August this year.

Rs 300 for voter identity card!

GUWAHATI, Sept 24: Rupees 300 can give you a fake Indian voter identity card in the northeast. This was revealed by the three illegal Bangladeshi nationals, who were picked up by the Guwahati Police from a city hotel on Sunday night, following an interrogation.  Md Masud, Shohel Rana and Shafikul Islam entered Tripura with Bangladeshi passports and later took the help of Shikhan Mian, who is a resident of Tripura, to visit Assam. Police sources said Shikhan Mian was paid Rs 300 by each of the three Bangladeshi nationals to arrange Indian voter identity cards for them.  The four including Shikhan Mian reached Guwahati from Agartala on Sunday and stayed in a city hotel. Acting on a tip off, the border police raided the hotel and nabbed the four persons.  The border police also recovered Bangladeshi currency and passports from the arrested persons.

Around 14 lakh people marooned, 16 districts affected by floods

GUWAHATI/NALBARI/JORHAT, Sept 24: The flood situation remained grim in the State on Monday with more new areas submerged across 16 districts, including some parts of Guwahati city, marooning nearly 14 lakh people in the State.http://img.ymlp209.net/kxh8_floods.jpg

A total of 1,972 villages had come under floodwaters, official sources said. The government has opened 169 relief camps for the marooned, the sources said, adding that over 2.31 lakh people were staying in these relief camps.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has instructed the State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Prithivi Majhi from Tokyo to monitor the relief and rehabilitation works in the flood affected districts of the State. "As per the directive of the Chief Minister, Prithivi Majhi has asked the concerned ministers of the flood affected districts to monitor the flood situation and to take up rescue and relief measures on a war footing," stated an official statement.

Official sources confirmed that four people had died in the floods — one in Dibrugarh district and three in Tinsukia. Unofficial sources, however, put the death toll at eight. The sources further said the figures might increase as nine people were reported missing till Monday evening.

The flood situation in lower Assam districts especially Kamrup (rural), Nalbari, Barpeta and Baksa remained grim with the water level not showing any receding trend. Sources informed that three more embankments were breached on Monday in lower Assam.

Floodwaters of the Mora Pagladiya river breached one new embankment at Balijhar in Nalbari district while the other two embankments were breached at Rangiya in Kamrup (rural) and Goreswar in Baksa districts by Nona and Pagladiya rivers respectively.

As per official reports, nearly 60,000 people in 55 villages are affected by the floods in Rangiya, Hajo, Nalbari and Baksa. Over 10,000 flood-affected people of Barjhar, Dipta, Suradi, Dahkauniya, Nambarbhag, Alagjhar among other villages have taken shelter on high grounds.

The surging waters flowing down from the Bhutan hills have caused extensive damage in lower Assam districts this time.

Most of the areas of Rangiya subdivision in Kamrup (rural) district have been submerged by the floodwaters. The flood situation has added to the woes of the people of the greater Rangiya subdivision as the authority concerned has not initiated timely steps to repair the damage in embankments.

Flood situation in Baksa district also remained critical on Monday. Flood affected people of 10 villages under Barama revenue circle in Baksa district protested against the failure of Baksa district administration in providing flood relief materials. Flood situation is also grim in Barpeta district till the time of filing this report.

Flood situation in Majuli island in Jorhat district has taken a worse turn on Monday. Most parts of the river island are under water.Floodwaters washed away Kamalabari-Auniati road. The Jorhat district administration closed all the educational institutions in Majuli for an indefinite period.

On the other hand, massive land erosion is also continuing at Namoni Majuli. About 11 houses have been washed away last night at Subidha Chapori under Ahotguri Gaon Panchyat in Majuli. Most of the areas in Majuli have no road communication, no electricity and no ferry service.

Vedic Wisdom behind eating with your hands

Eating food with the hands in today's Western society can sometimes be perceived as being unhygienic, bad mannered and primitive. However within Indian culture there is an old saying that,
" Eating food with your hands feeds not only the body but also the mind and the spirit".

In the Big Brother series some years back, an English participant complained about an Indian participants use of her hands during food preparations and her eating habits, "They eat with their hands in India, don't they? Or is that China? You don't know where those hands have been."  Within many Indian households nowadays, the practice of eating food with the hands has been replaced with the use of cutlery.

Have you ever thought of why previous generations in India ate with the hands? There is a reason for their this.  The practice of eating with the hands originated within Ayurvedic teachings. The Vedic people knew the power held in the hand.
The ancient native tradition of eating food with the hands is derived from the mudra practice, which is prevalent in many aspects within Hinduism. Mudras are used during mediation and are very prominent within the many classical forms of dance, such as Bharatnatyam
\.
The hands are considered the most precious organ of action. This is linked to the Vedic prayer of
"Karagre vasate Laksmih karamule Sarasvati Karamadhye tu Govindah prabhate karadarsanam"
(On the tip of your fingers is Goddess Lakshmi, on the base of your fingers is Goddess Saraswati; in the middle of your fingers is Lord Govinda), which we recite whilst looking at our palms. Thus, this shloka suggests that all the divinity lies in human effort.
Our hands and feet are said to be the conduits of the five elements. The Ayurvedic texts teach that each finger is an extension of one of the five elements. The thumb is agni (fire) (you might have seen children sucking their thumb, this is nature's way of aiding the digestion in children at an age when they are unable to do an physical activity to aid the digestion), the forefinger is vayu (air), the middle finger is akash (ether - the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body), the ring finger is prithvi (earth) and the little finger is jal (water).

Each finger aids in the transformation of food, before it passes on to internal digestion. Gathering the fingertips as they touch the food stimulates the five elements and invites Agni to bring forth the digestive juices. As well as improving digestion the person becomes more conscious of the tastes, textures and smells of the foods they are eating, which all adds to the pleasure of eating.

You may have noticed that elders in the family hardly ever use utensils to measure all the different type of masala, and would instead prefer to use their hands to measure the quantity instead. As each handful is tailored to provide a suitable amount for the own body. Overall there are 6 main documented forms that the hands take when obtaining a measurement a certain type of food ranging from solid food to seeds, and flour.
This is a prime example of how many things within Hindu culture may seem weird and unusual at first glance, but once a closer look is taken it is surprising, but a vast amount of knowledge is revealed.

Fwd: [sanghshakha] India sold in the hands of US & European [India for Sale]--Must Read

India sold in the hands of US & European:
(1) Empirical studies have shown that consumer prices in supermarkets in Latin America, Africa and Asia have remained higher than the open market by 20 to 30 per cent….

(2) The Indian retail market is estimated to be around $400 billion with more than 12 million retailers employing 40 million people. Ironically, Wal-Mart's turnover is also around $420 billion, but it employs only 2.1 million people…….

(3) New York Times expose showed how Wal-Mart had captured nearly 50 per cent of Mexico's retail market in 10 years. as per the NYT disclosure "the Mexican subsidiary of Wal-Mart, which opened 431 stores in 2011, had paid bribes & an internal enquiry into the matter has been suppressed at corporate headquarters in Arkansas"……..

(4) In India, we are aware that Wal-Mart alone had spent Rs.52 crore in two years to lobby, as per a disclosure statement made in the U.S. It has certainly paid off.

Made in the United States
For U.S. President Barack Obama there could be nothing more cheering. The 'underachiever' now goes to the presidential polls with a lot of confidence — India's decision to open up FDI in multi-brand retail comes as a shot in the arm for the beleaguered American economy and will obviously boost his poll prospects.

Mr. Obama certainly knows what is good for the U.S. economy; Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also knows what is in America's interest. Mr. Obama, for instance, wanted to stop outsourcing to protect U.S. jobs. No amount of persuasion from India changed his mind. Similarly, knowing how important FDI in retail is for him, he had pitched for a new wave of economic reforms. It was surprising to see Mr. Obama telling India what is good for us.

Aided and abetted by TIME magazine and credit rating agencies like Standard&Poor's, Fitch and Moody's, India finally buckled under global pressure. What is little known is that India was also under a G-20 obligation to remove all hurdles to the growth of multi-brand retail.

But is FDI in retail really good for India? Will it improve rural infrastructure, reduce wastage of agricultural produce, and enable farmers to get a better price for their crops? While a lot has been said and written about the virtues of big retail, let me make an attempt to answer some of the big claims.

Agriculture: The Prime Minister has repeatedly projected FDI in retail as a boon for agriculture. Unfortunately, this is not true. Even in the U.S., big retail has not helped farmers — it is federal support that makes agriculture profitable. In its last Farm Bill in 2008, the U.S. made a provision of $307 billion for agriculture for the next five years. .

Where is the justification for such massive support if big retail was providing farmers better prices? And let us not forget, despite these subsidies studies have shown that one farmer in Europe quits agriculture every minute.

The second argument is that big retail will squeeze out middleman and therefore provide a better price to farmers. This is again not borne by facts. In the U.S., some studies have shown that the net income of farmers has come down from 70 per cent in the early 20th century to less than four per cent in 2005.

This is because big retail actually brings in a new battery of middlemen — quality controller, standardiser, certification agency, processor, packaging consultants etc. It is these middlemen who walk away with the profits and the farmer is left to survive on the subsidy dole.

Monopolistic power enables these companies to go in for predatory pricing. Empirical studies have shown that consumer prices in supermarkets in Latin America, Africa and Asia have remained higher than the open market by 20 to 30 per cent.
And finally, the argument that multi-brand retail will provide adequate scientific storage and thereby save millions of tonnes of food grains from rotting. I don't know where in the world big retail has provided backend grain storage facilities?
FDI is already allowed in storage, and no investment has come in. Let it also be known that even the 30-per-cent local sourcing clause for single-brand retail has already been challenged and quietly put in cold storage by the Ministry of Commerce.

Employment: The Indian retail market is estimated to be around $400 billion with more than 12 million retailers employing 40 million people. Ironically, Wal-Mart's turnover is also around $420 billion, but it employs only 2.1 million people. If Wal-Mart can achieve the same turnover with hardly a fraction of the workforce employed by the Indian retail sector, how do we expect big retail to create jobs? It is the Indian retail sector which is a much bigger employer, and big retail will only destroy millions of livelihoods.

State government's prerogative: Very cleverly, the Central government has allowed the State governments the final say in allowing FDI in retail. This may to some extent pacify those State governments opposed to big retail. However, the industry is upbeat and knows well that as per international trade norms, member countries have to provide national treatment. Being a signatory to Bilateral Investment promotion and Protection Agreements (BIPAs), India has to provide national treatment to the investors. Agreements with more than 70 countries have already been signed. State governments will, therefore, have to open up for big retail. Industries will use the legal option to force the States to comply.

And more importantly, let us look at how the virus of big retail spreads, even if the promise is to keep it confined to major cities. Recently, a New York Times expose showed how Wal-Mart had captured nearly 50 per cent of Mexico's retail market in 10 years. What is important here is that as per the NYT disclosure "the Mexican subsidiary of Wal-Mart, which opened 431 stores in 2011, had paid bribes and an internal enquiry into the matter has been suppressed at corporate headquarters in Arkansas".

In India, we are aware that Wal-Mart alone had spent Rs.52 crore in two years to lobby, as per a disclosure statement made in the U.S. It has certainly paid off.
