barking up the tree

Barking up the wrong tree
Minority politics is perennial fare in India, but it peaks at poll time for that’s when secular politicos call in favours from their, er, well, most favoured constituencies. While on paper, the Constitution and electoral guidelines expressly prohibit candidates from seeking votes in the name of religion, strangely those nurturing minority vote banks are deemed exempt.

This explains why while alleged hate speeches against minorities agitate the authorities and media, open overtures overflowing with love for minorities barely register on their radar! And we are not even thinking of hate speeches by ‘them’! Varun Gandhi has said many things, but the oft-quoted remark that has reportedly landed him in jail is this: ‘If anyone raises a finger towards Hindus or if someone thinks that Hindus are weak and leaderless, if someone thinks that these leaders lick our boots for votes, if anyone raises a finger towards Hindus, then I swear on the (Bhagavad) Gita that I will cut that hand’. By association with his other speeches, this was assumed as a vitriolic attack on Muslims. And the ‘cutting off the hand’ bit ensured that a speech which intended to express love for Hindus got turned into a hate harangue! It needs to be recorded here that most Hindus can do without this kind of love.

But imagine this scenario which is actually very real: Mullahs and Muslim politicians routinely issue dire warnings that their religion and brotherhood should not be dabbled with in anyway and that includes perfectly Constitutional ways too. No National Security Act or for that matter, even a simple Cr PC provision, was invoked against a UP minister who issued an open fatwa a couple of years back announcing a reward of Rs 51 crores for the killer of the one who published the Danish cartoons. Congress and Left politicians vie with one another in showing themselves as protectors, in a very physical sense, if you see what I mean, of minorities and Muslims in particular. For instance, the murderous violence unleashed by Marxists goons against Hindus in Kannur district of Kerala a year or so back was secular ‘holy’ war to defeat communalism! But Varun as a self-appointed protector of Hindus in a far lesser vein, is communal to boot! Are the scales even?

Let’s move to a less morbid secularism, the secularism of love but nevertheless as violative of the Constitution and poll codes as hate speeches are. Shashi Tharoor is the Cong candidate for Thiruvananthapuram; yes, the same ST who contested unsuccessfully for the UN Sec-genship. The opponent Left Front has promptly pounced on his ‘anti-Muslim’ credentials by quoting articles written by him in which he has extolled the virtues of Israel vis-a-vis its Muslim neighbours. An unsuspecting Tharoor had even recommended that India should emulate Israel and walk into Pak! That did it! In a jiffy the ‘communal’ Tharoor was floored and is now clinging on to all props to rise as a secular phoenix. Here’s latest Tharoor speak: ‘Nobody can question my pro-Muslim credentials’! And he has promptly set about setting the record straight to the point that the might-have-been Sec-Gen of UN had not even heard of Israel. And he is busy meeting local Imams, offering explanations and seeking pardon. The Imams have promised to revert, but clearly hold a veto on him. Now if this is not communal vote gathering, what is? But then why would non-communal, secular Leftists bother about Tharoor being pro or anti Muslim? Again, why should ‘secular’ Imams and their brotherhoods worry about Tharoor’s pro-Israel leanings? And why should such a seasoned diplomat as Shashi Tharoor lapse into such a sorry spectacle of uninhibited remorse? Does not the Cong feel ashamed by this? Now, where and with whom does real communalism lie?

Most party manifestos openly declare support and succour for religious minorities. None less than the PM of the land had last year announced that the minorities have the first right over the resources of the nation as if the rest are children of a lesser god. His party follows it up in these polls by waving the Sachar report at Muslims and openly seeking votes in its name. The moment a religious riot happens, the secular vultures scent votes and swoop down to scavenge. The likes of K from elections immemorial have made a career out of communally rabid hate speeches, not to speak of poems, scripts and essays. It does not need much rationalism to know all those great ‘Dravidian literature’; it’s all open record. In Kerala, the Left have no qualms about associating with Madani. The Mulayams, Lalus and Paswans gleefully talk of a Muslim PM and this too passes muster under the secular smokescreen. Every party, from the rank communal to the neo-liberal would only field a minority candidate from a minority stronghold in due deference to the omnipotent secularism. Have anyone heard ‘secular’ parties like Muslim League or the Christian Democratic Front talk about price rise or CTBT? They get vocal only vis-a vis issues that affect the religion they represent. But no EC has till date bothered to send as much as a notice to any of these secular zealots who vitiate the poll scene far more than those promising to cut off hands.

But can minority politics survive without help from the minorities themselves? A good part of the minorities unfortunately believe that their interests are best served and secured only if they vote as a religious block. Now, is this not communal? Or for that matter, was not their refusal to recite the Vande Mataram communal? In fact, would not singing it have proved their secular credentials just as the majority community is proving their’s day in and day out? But nobody bothered about that angle. And the high point has come officially from Home Minister PC who in an obvious reference to the BJP has declared that ‘communalism is more dangerous than terrorism’. I am at liberty to interpret it as ‘Varun is more dangerous than Kasab’! We now know why Afzal Guru is consistently skipping the noose!

Indeed, secularism has turned out to be the most communal word in the Indian political lexicon. For, minority politics under that banner has caused more communal polarisation than the Varuns of the land. As they say, they deserve each other and we resent both. Our only grouse is that the dice is dangerously loaded.

Lalu Yadav booked for remarks against Varun Gandhi

Lalu Yadav booked for remarks against Varun Gandhi

Tue, Apr 7 03:50 PM

Patna, Apr 7 (ANI): A case has been lodged against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav for making derogatory remarks against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi.

The Kishanganj District administration filed its complaint against Lalu Yadav under the People's Representation Act this morning.

Addressing an election meeting in Bihar's Kishanganj on Monday, Lalu Yadav had said, "Had I been the country's Home Minister, I would have crushed Varun Gandhi under a roller and destroyed him without caring for the consequences of his hate speech against Muslims."

Varun Gandhi, who is a BJP candidate for the Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh was accused of making inflammatory communal remarks at an election meeting in his constituency on March 6.

However, Gandhi maintains his innocence claiming that the CD containing his speech was tampered with. He is currently in Uttar Pradesh's Etah jail.

Meanwhile, the Janata Dal- United (JD-U) criticised Lalu Yadav for insulting Varun Gandhi.

Earlier, the JD (U) had complained to the Election Commission against Lalu's wife and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi for alleged insulting remarks against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Janata Dal- United (JD-U) chief Rajiv Ranjan at a poll rally in Saran on April 4. (ANI)

India for more anti-terror cooperation with Gulf

India for more anti-terror cooperation with Gulf

Mon, Apr 6 05:47 PM

Kuwait, April 6 (IANS) Indian Vice President Monday called for greater cooperation between India and the Gulf countries to combat the 'international plague' of terrorism as he began his three-day visit to the oil-rich Gulf emirate. He also sought more Kuwaiti investment in India's infrastructure development.

Kuwait rolled out the red carpet to welcome Ansari, the first high-level visit from India to this country that has a large Indian expatriate population.

Ansari, a former ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, was received at Kuwait International Airport by Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

'It's an international plague and has to be fought like a plague,' Ansari told reporters here when asked whether India planned to increase counter-terrorism cooperation with the Gulf countries.

'Terrorism is a common problem. We have been cooperating with Kuwait and other countries in the region both bilaterally and multilaterally,' he said.

We have been advocating a more comprehensive anti-terror treaty, he said.

Ansari's visit will focus on pushing economic, energy and strategic ties between India and Kuwait, home to 580,000 Indians and 10 percent of the world's proven oil reserves.

Ansari was to call on the Amir Of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and discussed an entire range of bilateral and global issues.

The two countries are expected to sign two pacts in the area of science and technology cooperation as well as educational exchanges for 2009-11. Enhancing cooperation in maritime security is high on the agenda as India exports nearly 70 percent of its oil requirements from the Persian Gulf region.

With recession hitting developing countries, Ansari will make a pitch for accelerated Kuwaiti investment into India in his address to the Kuwaiti Chambers of Commerce and Industry Tuesday.

'We are looking for funds in infrastructure. It remains a high priority for us,' Ansari said when asked whether India was looking for investments from Kuwait. Although recession has hit parts of Kuwait's economy, its economy is still going strong. Kuwait is said to have over $80 billion oil revenues and is looking east to invest.

Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan and senior officials of the external affairs and petroleum ministries are also accompanying Ansari on this important visit to the Gulf country.

Ansari will attend a reception hosted for members of the Indian community in Kuwait Monday evening.

What ideal should we follow now?

Disciple:- What ideal should we follow now?

Sw.Vivekananda: -

You have now to make charachter of Mahavira your ideal.

See how at the command of Ramachandra he crossed the ocean. He had no care for life or death! He was a perfect master of his senses and wonderfully sagacious. You have now to build your life on this great ideal of personal service. Through that, all other ideals will gradually manifest in life. Obedience to the Guru without questioning, and strict observance of Brahamacharya- this is the secret of success.

As on the one hand Hanuman represent the ideal of service,

so on the other hand he represents leonine courage, striking the whole world with awe. He has not the least hesitation in sacrificing his life for the good of Rama. A supreme indifference to everything except the service of Rama, even to the attainment of the status of Brahma and Shiva, the great World-Gods! Only the carrying out of Shri Rama's best is the one vow of his life!

Such whole-hearted devotion is wanted. Playing on the Khol and Kartal and dancing in the frenzy of Kirtana has degenerated the whole people. They are, in the first place, a race of dyspeptics-and if in addition to this they dance and jump in that way, how can they bear the strain? In trying imitate the highest Sadhana, the preliminary qualification for which is absoulute purity, they have been swallowed in dire Tamas. In every distirct and village you may visit, you will find only the sound of the Khol and Kartal! Are not drums made in the country? Are not trumpets and kettle-drums available in India? make the boys hear the deep-toned sound of these instruments. Hearing from boyhood the sound of these effeminate forms of music and listening to kirtana, the country is well-nigh converted into a country of women. What more degradation can you expect? Even the poet's imagination fails to draw this picture!

The Damaru (An hour-glass shaped drum, held in Shiva's hand) and horn have to be sounded, drums are to be beaten so as to raise the deep and martial notes, and with "Mahavira, Mahavira" on your lips and shouting "Hara,Hara,Vyom, Vyom", the quarters are to be reverbeated. The music which awakens only softer feelings of man is to be stopped now for some time. Stopping the light tunes such as Kheal and Tappa for some time, the people are to be accustomed to hear the Dhrupad music. Through the thunder-roll of the dignified Vedic hymns, life is to be brought back into the country. In everything the austere spirit of heroic manhood is to be revived. In following such an ideal lies the good of the people and the country. If you can build your charachter after such an ideal, then thousand others will follow. But take care that you do not swerve an inch from the ideal. Never loose heart. in eating, dressing, or lying, in singing or playing, in enjoyment or disease, always manifest the highest moral courage. Then only will you attain the grace of Mahashakti, the Divine Mother.

Afghanistan legalised rape of women within marriage etc.. international concerns speak out Apr 5, '09 8:46 PM
for everyone

Karzai bows to international calls to scrap Afghan 'rape' law

(Guardian UK April 5th)

Gordon Brown tells President Hamid Karzai that British soldiers could not die defending regime that oppresses women

Afghanistan is to review legislation which the UN says would legalise rape within marriage after a dramatic reversal from the president, Hamid Karzai, who signed the rules into law last month.

Karzai has bowed to intense international pressure to scrap the law, described by the UN human rights chief in Afghanistan as "reminiscent of the decrees made by the Taliban regime".

It is said to forbid women to refuse to have sex with their husbands and force them to get their spouses' permission before leaving the house, looking for a job, going to the doctor or receiving education.

Gordon Brown has led the international condemnation of the law, saying today it would be unacceptable for British soldiers to die defending a regime that enacted oppressive legislation of this kind. The prime minister told Sky News that Nato leaders had attacked the law in the communique issued at the end of the summit in Strasbourg, and that Karzai had told him it would not come into force in the way that it had been reported.

"I phoned the president immediately about this because anybody who looks at Afghanistan will be worried if we are going to see laws brought in that discriminate against women and put women at risk," Brown said.

"I made it absolutely clear to the president that we could not tolerate that situation. You cannot have British troops fighting, and in some cases dying, to save a democracy where that democracy is infringing human rights.

"[Karzai] responded by saying this law would not be enacted in the way it has been presented."

The Afghan president was accused of backing the law to win support from hardliners ahead of the presidential election. But a western diplomat said Karzai had been damaged by the international criticism of the legislation, which only affects members of the Shia minority, and was "looking for a face-saving way to drop it". "Given that it is election season right now plus the problems it would stir up it might be better if it could be buried," he said.

Fears have also been raised about the safety of the female parliamentarians who have spoken out on the issue. Foreign ambassadors met in Kabul today to consider a request to pay for bodyguards to protect them.

On Saturday Karzai rejected international criticism of the law, saying it had been "misinterpreted" by the west. But he promised to send it to the Ministry of Justice for review and amendment if it was found to conflict with the equal rights provisions in Afghanistan's constitution.

The final version of the law has not been published, although it was enacted in mid-March.

An analysis by the Canadian embassy in Kabul of the version that was sent by parliament to the president says the law contains a number of articles removing the rights of women. Custody of children, for example, is automatically granted to fathers and grandfathers, and provision is made for minors to marry, although a later amendment set the age of marriage to the same as Afghan civil law.

The most controversial article says that the wife is "bound to preen for her husband, as and when he desires" and "is bound to give a positive response to the sexual desire of her husband".

Defenders of the law have pointed out that the legislation was improved by the lower house of parliament, which introduced the concession allowing women to leave their homes without the permission of their husbands if they had a good reason to.

Dr Qasim Hashimzai, deputy minister of justice, said a review process had been set up that would include the United Nations and representatives from a number of diplomatic missions in Kabul, including the European Union, Canada and Holland. "We still have time to review it because the law is not yet finalised until it is printed in the official gazette. Once we get everyone around a table we can see what needs to be done." He did not give a date for when the review might be completed.

Our Indians' Money - 70,00,000 Crores Rupees In Swiss Bank

Our Indians' Money - 70,00,000 Crores Rupees In Swiss Bank

1) Yes, 70 lakhs crores rupees of India are lying in Switzerland banks. This is the highest amount lying outside any country, from amongst 180 countries of the world, as if India is the champion of Black Money.

2) German Government has officially written to Indian Government that they (German Government) are willing to inform the details of holders of 70 lakh crore rupees in their Banks, if Indian Government officially asks them.

3) On 22-5-08, this news has already been published in The Times of India and other Newspapers based on German Government's official letter to Indian Government.

4) But the Indian Government has not sent any official enquiry to Germany for details of money which has been sent outside India between 1947 to 2008. The opposition party is also equally not interested in doing so because most of the amount is owned by politicians and it is every Indian's money.

5) This money belongs to our country. From these funds we can repay 13 times of our country's foreign debt. The interest alone can take care of the Centre's yearly budget. People need not pay any taxes and we can pay Rs. 1 lakh to each of 45 crore poor families.

6) Let us imagine, if Swiss Bank is holding Rs. 70 lakh crores, then how much money is lying in other 69 Banks? How much they have deprived the Indian people? Just think, if the Account holder dies, the bank becomes the owner of the funds in his account.

7) Are these people totally ignorant about the philosophy of Karma ? What will this ill-gotten wealth do to them and their families when they own/use such money, generated out of corruption and exploitation?

8) Indian people have read and have known about these facts. But the helpless people have neither time nor inclination to do anything in the matter. This is like "a new freedom struggle" and we will have to fight this.

9) This money is the result of our sweat and blood. The wealth generated and earned after putting in lots of mental and physical efforts by Indian people must be brought back to our country.

10) As a service to our motherland and you contribution to this struggle, please circulate copies of this note amongst your friends and relatives and convert it into a mass movement.
