A letter to PM

Self Confidence

When Henry Ward Beecher was a young boy in school, he

learned a lesson in self confidence which he never

forgot.

He was called upon to recite in front of the class. He

had hardly begun when the teacher interrupted with an

emphatic, "No!" He started over and again the teacher

thundered, "No!"

Humiliated, Henry sat down. The next boy rose to

recite and had just begun when the teacher shouted,

"No!" This student, however, kept on with the

recitation until he completed it.

As he sat down, the teacher replied, "Very good!"

Henry was irritated. "I recited just as he did," he

complained to the teacher. But the instructor replied,

"It is not enough to know your lesson; you must be

sure. When you allowed me

to stop you, it meant that you were uncertain. If all

the world says, 'No!' it is your business to say,

'Yes!' and prove it."

The world will say, "No!" in a thousand ways.

"No! You can't do that."

"No! You are wrong."

"No! You are too old."

"No! You are too young."

"No! You are too weak."

"No! It will never work."

"No! You don't have the education."

"No! You don't have the background."

"No! You don't have the money."

"No! It can't be done."

And each "No!" you hear has the potential to erode

your confidence bit by bit until you quit all

together.

Though the world says, "No!" to you today, will you

determine to say, "Yes!" and prove it?

Bird's wings

An old legend relates that long ago God had a great many burdens which He wished to have carried from one place to another on earth, so He asked the animals to lend a hand. But all of them began to make excuses for not helping: the elephant was too dignified; the lion, too proud; and so on. Finally the birds came to God and said, "If you will tie the burdens into small bundles, we'll be glad to carry them for you. We are small but we would like to help."

So God fastened upon the back of each one a small bundle, and they all set out walking across the plain to their destination. They sang as they went, and did not seem to feel the weight of their burdens at all. Every day the burdens seemed lighter and lighter, until the loads seems to be lifting the birds, instead of the birds carrying the burdens.

When they arrived at their destination, they discovered that when they removed their loads, there were wings in their place, wings which enabled them to fly to the sky and the tree tops.

They had learned how to carry their burdens, and their loads had become wings to carry them nearer to God.

Burdens we carry for others may become wings of the spirit, to lift us into happiness such as we have never known.

HAPPINESS is the delicate balance of what one is and what one has.

The RSS expresses shock and anguish over the dastardly attack of the terrorists in Mumbai city that killed over 100 people including a number of policemen. The magnitude of the attack - number of terrorists, huge quantity of weapons that they were carrying and the brazenness with which they attacked a number of prime locations in the city - clearly indicates that the terrorists have launched not just an attack but a war on the nation.

It is clear that the intention of the terrorists is to destroy peace, harmony and morale of our nation. The RSS has always stood firmly against all those who have been the enemies of our national unity, democracy and civilization. At this hour of crises I extend wholehearted support to the Government and the agencies and call upon the entire nation to rise as one man and destroy the nefarious designs of the terrorists.

I urge the Swayamsevaks to continue their efforts to rescue hundreds injured or otherwise affected by this terror attack. I also ask them to maintain utmost vigil to ensure that nothing that would hamper the efforts of the Government and the agencies would be allowed to take place anywhere in the country.

I pay tearful homage to all those people who have lost their lives in this barbarous terrorist attack. I salute the brave security personnel - including senior officers like Sri Hemant Karkare, Sri Vijay Salaskar, Sri Ashok Kamte - who have laid down their lives valiantly defending our nation.
